In this recent article for HGTV, Lindsay Bond Totten writes, “a good path not only tells you where to walk, it sets the mood for your landscape.” This is the perfect way to describe this wonderful feature, one that can truly act as the “backbone” of your yard. Whether your backyard landscaping has a relaxed vibe or is a more formal area, a path is a wonderful addition to your outdoor living space. Totten’s article has outlined some of the things to keep in mind when working with your designer on your area:
• If you prefer a more formal look, try some flagstone with mortared joints. For a more natural and organic look, stone laid on sand will allow you to tuck plants into the cracks, and moss may even start to grow depending on the level of shade and moisture. This gives a lovely natural effect.
• Another formal detail to consider is concrete stamped with a decorative pattern, giving your outdoor living space the feel of a classic English garden. There are many styles to choose from and gives a more elegant impression than plain concrete. Stamped concrete can give water features like a pond, waterfall or a birdbath a gothic-inspired look. You also have the choice to tint the concrete to either match or contrast other features in your outdoor living area
• For a distinctive rustic look, recycled bricks add character and charm. They may be irregular in size or have chipped edges, but are sure to provide a unique look and add to the overall ambiance you create within your space.
• The shape of your path can also influence the overall feel of the space. Traditionally, a curving path is more relaxed whereas a straight path is more formal. A curving path can be a way to encourage your visitors to explore new areas of your property, if it is a larger one. Persuade them to explore and discover!
